Shape Safari

Kindergartners walked into school Friday and discovered that the room had been transformed into the Serengeti! With zebras, giraffes, elephants, and many more African animals around the room, we decided to go on a Shape Safari!
On our safari, we searched high and low for all kinds of animals. When we found an animal, we recorded the number on the picture and then flipped the picture over to reveal a shape!
We then recorded our findings in our field journals and wrote the number of sides/vertices the shape had. It was such a busy and fun way to celebrate our learning and test our 2D shape knowledge. Check out some pictures below to see our safari in action along with some photos with our giraffe visitor, Twiga!

Shorter and Longer

In our new math module, we are busy comparing lengths of objects. This past week, each Kindergartner was given a piece of string, each a different length. They were then challenged to find 5 things in the room that were shorter than their string, 5 things that were longer, and 5 things that were about the same length. The Kinders were mighty creative, measuring everything from their legs, classmates, Miss Keenan's coffee cup, and just about everything else in our room!

Snow Forts and 3D Shapes

Throughout the school year, the Kinders are challenged to use their problem solving skills and engineering/math skills to create. When we were studying winter weather and snow, the Kinders were each given a cup of toothpicks and a plate of mini marshmallows to share. They were then challenged to create a 3D snow fort!
Using their understanding of 3D/2D shapes and imaginations, the Kinders created some truly amazing structures. Look through the pictures below to see some of their creations.
